In the first of a series of talking to some of our favourite suppliers, we meet local artist Ilona Drew from I Drew This.
We have been stocking Ilona’s cards for a little while now and recently started stocking her amaizng giclee prints of the Pavilion and the Bandstand which have been a hit. This is our latest window display with the framed Pavilion print hung in pride of place.
So Ilona, what is your background and are you from Brighton originally?
No I am not from Brighton originally, I spent most of my younger years in a part of the Midlands called Stourbridge. I have been living here for eight years now and I love it, its the perfect place for meetings/inspiration/good food and entertainment!!
What made you go alone as I Drew This?
I had always aspired to be my own boss, having worked in house for a couple of greeting card publishers for six years I finally felt confident enough to take the plunge and go freelance.
Where do you get your inspiration and ideas from?
My inspiration comes from kids, animals, architecture, landscapes, instagram, Pinterest I am constantly thinking about my next project!!
Which other artists do you admire?
I love the illustration work of Marc Boutavant’s and Alain Gree and am keen to get up to London to see the Sonia Delaunay exhibition at the Tate Modern, gorgeous colour work.
What challenges have you faced while running your business?
There are so many challenges to running your own business, mainly juggling time and cash-flow especially with kids ( I have one four year old daughter) but the rewards are amazing, I Drew This has really picked up speed this year and the hard work is beginning to pay off, I am about to take part in a trade show, PG Live held at the design centre in Islington and I am really looking forward to what it may bring for the company.
Can you imagine doing anything else?
